Center for Voter Education Responds to Gov. Perdue’s Reform Proposals
RALEIGH – In response to the ethics reforms proposed by Gov. Bev Perdue today, the N.C. Center for Voter Education offers the following statement from its executive director, Damon Circosta:
“In her very first executive order, Gov. Perdue noted that the current campaign finance system contributes to the electorate’s perception of impropriety and mistrust in government. In order to tackle the big challenges facing North Carolina we need to regain the public’s confidence that our democracy is being run of, for and by the people.
"By calling upon the legislature to impose limits on fundraising by government contractors and taking measures to increase transparency, Gov. Perdue is showing leadership on an issue that is all too often ignored by incumbent policy makers.
"We applaud the steps taken by the governor this afternoon and encourage the General Assembly to move swiftly in enacting this and any other reforms that will increase public confidence in our government.”
The N.C. Center for Voter Education is a Raleigh-based nonprofit and nonpartisan organization dedicated to informing and involving citizens so that they may more fully participate in democracy.
